Neuroskeptic fixes science, also

April 6, 2012

Neuroskeptics blog

A lot of us want to fix science these days. Here is Neuroskeptics take.  (And a link to Ben Goldacre, who is fun to follow too).  The suggestion here is about implementing pre-registration of experiments.  Evidently they do it in medicine.  Possibly another way of fixing things like possibly file-drawer, or data-peeking, or adjusting the hypothesis to the data, after it is all collected and didn’t work the way originally expected….

  1. Thanks for the link. Nice blog by the way.

In my view, to fix science, we’ll have to fix how we publish science. That may not be the only thing we need to do, but without that, no amount of reforms of the culture, career structure etc. will work. Current publication practices create perverse incentives that are deforming everything else

  2. Yes, I agree something needs to be done with the publishing also. Not sure what, but, well, spend some time thinking about that too. I wonder if it will slowly go the way that much other publishing is slowly going with the advent of the internet? Music business, for example. I’m sure I will post more on this 🙂
